HIPAA Training and Education

All personnel, including volunteers, in an IU HIPAA Affected Area or students in programs in certain health science schools are required to obtain training related to the regulatory obligations under the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. The training requirements must be met on an annual basis. Individuals can meet the annual HIPAA training requirement through any of the options listed below.

Please Note: CITI training does not count towards the annual HIPAA training requirement.

When using the online training option, please note:

There are compatibility problems with Internet Explorer and IU Expand, for best results, use a different browser (e.g. Chrome or Firefox).

Online training options

Basic HIPAA training (faculty, staff, residents, affiliates, volunteers)

To access this course from IU Expand E-Training:

Go to: IU Expand E-Training - HIPAA Privacy & Security Course Listing
Click "Enroll"
Login to Expand if you have not already done so.
- You will use your IU credentials to login; or
- If you do not have IU credentials, you can take the steps to create a guest account
Click "Enroll in Course"
Select "Go to Your Dashboard"
Locate the appropriate course icon under "In Progress" (Top left)
Select “Begin Course” to complete the course

Mobile device security training

To access this course from IU Expand E-Training:

Go to: IU Expand E-Training - HIPAA Mobile Device Security Course Listing
Click "Enroll"
Login to Expand if you have not already done so.
- You will use your IU credentials to login; or
- If you do not have IU credentials, you can take the steps to create a guest account
Click "Enroll in Course"
Select "Go to Your Dashboard"
Locate the appropriate course icon under "In Progress" (Top left)
Select “Begin Course” to complete the course

Note: You are required to take this training one time and this module alone does not count towards the annual training requirement. New employees should take this course in addition to the HIPAA module.

In-person and other training options

In-person

If you are in an IU HIPAA Affected Area and you receive HIPAA training in your unit, that session can be counted toward the annual HIPAA training requirement. Your unit's HIPAA liaison should have documentation to support your attendance.

You can also contact the HIPAA Compliance Office to request a training session for a group of individuals in an IU HIPAA Affected Area if in-person training is desired.

HIPAA training offered through health care affiliates

HIPAA training completed through one of IU's affiliates such as IU Health, IU Health Physicians, Eskenazi Health, Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center, etc., will count towards IU's annual HIPAA training requirement. To receive credit for that training the individual must provide documentation of attendance to their unit's HIPAA liaison.

Accessing IU's E Training Certificates

Viewing and Printing Training Certificates

Go to your Dashboard in Canvas/IU Expand:

Click on: expand.iu.edu/dashboard/completed
Click on: Log-in

Once logged-in, you will see your completed courses. Under the completed course information, if the certificate is valid, there will be a small gold seal and the course name. Next to the course name, there are two options (1) View or (2) Download.

Click on: View - the certificate will open in a window
Click on: Download - a PDF version of the certificate will be downloaded
